The ‘97 F-150 I posted about yesterday sold before I could get a chance to go look at it. Sad face.

I found some others, though.

This guy also emailed me follow-up photos.

Then , there’s this:

I messaged the seller for more info. He isn’t the best conversationalist but he is nice enough.

And, I’m still considering this Silverado I posted about before.

Thoughts, Oppo? Keep in mind I’m looking for a beater truck with working a/c to drive when severe weather is forecasted and also to drive in the snow and to take to the drive-in movies. That’s it.

Didn’t those extended cab F150s from that generation have terrible crash test ratings? Like the whole cab folded because there wasn’t enough reinforcing done with the extra cab door being added

Edit: Yup, found a pic

Fear of crashing makes you drive safe.

The 4.6 truck motor is an absolute dog, but it’ll still do basic hauling and towing duty and run forever doing it. A good cleaning would go a long way in that first truck.

The second truck is not a ‘99, it’s either a ‘97 or ‘98, and if it’s a V8 they don’t have plug wires, they’re coil on plug. Maybe the guy just doesn’t know exactly what he has, but those kind of oversights bother me when looking at vehicles because if they don’t care enough to know what year the truck is, how do you know they cared for anything else on it?

My friend totaled his Endeavor in a front-end wreck. It was so bad that his windshield cracked a lot. The Endeavor has a Good IIHS front crash rating. Because I’m replying to this comment, you already know what he replaced the Endeavor with.

I didn’t even know the F-150 was coming, honestly. He’d been working on an old Jeep with his dad, and suddenly in September or so, the F-150 came into his life. He’d always wanted a truck, too. I don’t know if it’s a breach of privacy to post a photo of his truck, but it’s a 1998 regular cab with the 5.4, a matte blue paint job, and some additional lights. There’s paint fade on the roof, but the truck is in fantastic condition. Just over 100,000 miles, interior looks flawless, the interior lighting can change colors via his phone, and it was a great deal, too. He found that, so I can’t even argue with it.

However, I did try to tell him, once he had the truck, that they had terrible safety ratings and he told me it was safe.

I know most older vehicles aren’t safe comparatively, but that generation of F150 just seemed so much worse.

Can’t speak for the Ford, but for the Chevy. I have a 2001 Sierra (same vehicle, different badge) with 300,000 miles and it’s been pretty much faultless and indestructible, with minimum maintenance, and even through a few minor crashes. Parts are available and cheap.

As for driving in the snow, unless you go for the 4wd, the 2wd don’t have much traction on slippery terrains. Which can be fun if you like to slide around . 7 x 70lbs sand tubes help to keep things grounded.

I’d get the Chevy.

I suspect the regular cab would be better than the extended cab simply because it is shorter and has less roof to buckle. Not that it will be great by modern standards mind you, but better than the extended cab. On a related topic, guess what I drive!

That generation of F150 is one of the worst. Ther s a reason you see three Chevys to every one Ford of that vintage.
